Bilateral Stimulation

(Visual, Auditory, and Tactile BLS)

About Bilateral Stimulation:

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) calms the body’s stress response, activating the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for rest and relaxation. This helps regulate emotions, reduce cravings, and promote inner calm. It also assists in processing and resolving traumatic memories, facilitating healing in the recovery journey.

More about BiLateral Stimulation

How & where is it Administered

Each provider at Red Sands is trained in (and can utilize) Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) during an appointment. Like all modalities, providers at Red Sands will work with each patient to determine the treatment plan that is right for them. Treatment could include visual, tactile, and auditory BLS in the office. We frequently use tactile buzzers, but some patients may have better results with auditory or visual stimulation. Clients can also be taught ways to use Bilateral Stimulation at home for regulation.

Play therapists at Red Sands will use Bilateral stimulation in session for regulation or, if trained in EMDR, for Reprocessing past traumatic

events.

What to Expect

When utilizing Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) therapy, patients can expect a structured approach to processing distressing memories and emotions. BLS helps stimulate both hemispheres of the brain, promoting natural healing and reducing the intensity of traumatic or negative experiences. Common benefits include decreased anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and relief from PTSD symptoms. Many patients also report enhanced clarity of mind and a sense of calm.

Over time, BLS can support emotional resilience, making it easier to cope with stress and triggering situations. Being able to utilize BLS tools/treatment outside of the office enables patients to take a proactive step in their own care and can be extremely beneficial.
