Lab Work

About Laboratory Testing:

In psychiatry, laboratory work plays a key role in both diagnosis and treatment planning. It also helps rule out underlying medical conditions that may cause psychiatric symptoms and allows clinicians to monitor the physiological effects of treatment. Labwork such as complete blood count (CBC) and comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) monitor the effects of medications such as antipsychotics. Labwork on thyroid function, and vitamin levels  (like D and B12) can rule out deficiencies that may be the cause of symptoms such as depressed mood, mania, schizophrenia, and seasonal affective disorder.

Recommended For:

Lab work may be utilized as a basic diagnostic test for all patients before treatment as well as a crucial evaluation step during treatment to monitor the therapeutic levels of medication therapy.
