IFS

(Internal Family Systems)

About IFS:

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based approach to therapy that views the human mind as a family of distinct, internal "parts" that work together. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, this therapy aims to help people understand these inner sub-personalities and find balance in life.

In brief, IFS explores how these different parts influence emotions, relationships, behaviors, and experiences. In doing so, it helps individuals better understand patterns of self-criticism, anxiety, avoidance, people-pleasing, emotional reactivity, internal conflict, and more.

This therapy modality encourages curiosity, compassion, and self-understanding rather than shame or self-judgment. It supports healing from difficult experiences by exploring protective patterns and emotional wounds at a safe pace.

Recommended For:

  • People experiencing inner conflict or feeling “pulled in different directions”

  • People who are struggling with self-criticism, perfectionism, anxiety, shame, avoidance, or are emotionally overwhelmed.

  • People seeking to better understand recurring patterns, triggers, or emotional reactions.

  • People working through difficult experiences, relational wounds, identity concerns, or emotional struggles.

  • People searching for greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and compassion towards themselves.

More about This Service

How It Works

IFS is primarily offered through individual therapy. In some cases, it may be integrated into couples therapy to explore emotional reactions, protective patterns, and relationship dynamics. IFS is often most beneficial as an ongoing therapy. It unfolds at a pace that supports safety, trust, and emotional readiness.

If you can't make it to our office or prefer to connect from home, this service is also available through our easy-to-use Telehealth portal. Contact us for details!

What to Expect

In IFS Therapy, clients will explore thoughts, emotions, and reactions with curiosity. This will help them better understand the different “parts” of themselves in stressful situations.

Rather than trying to eliminate difficult emotions, our therapists will work with clients to understand what purpose they may serve and what needs may exist beneath them.

Sessions involve reflection, noticing emotional experiences in real time. Expect a collaborative environment where clients build self-awareness and self-compassion at a comfortable pace.
