Biography

Cheryl Jordan is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Red Sands Psychiatry Restorative Therapy & Counseling. She is trained in play therapy and trauma-based treatments (EMDR and ART) and specializes in helping children, teens, and adults with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and loss.

Cheryl completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Redlands and thereafter attended Amherst, Massachusetts, earning a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science. She has also achieved a Master’s Degree in both Physical Therapy and Counseling (more on that below!)

With three master’s degrees and decades of clinical experience, Cheryl brings a unique, multidimensional perspective to mental health care. She has worn many hats professionally, including 30 years practicing as a Physical Therapist, where she worked in brain injury, neurological rehabilitation, and geriatric care. During this time, she found a love for hospice work and transitioned into a role in that field, helping patients and their families for over 10 years.

As her own children reached their high school years, Cheryl returned to school, earning a Master’s Degree in Counseling. Her internship period aligned with the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, during which she transitioned to a nearly full-time role as a telehealth therapist in a bereavement center, supporting children, teens, couples, and adults who had traumatically lost a loved one during that difficult time. After completing her degree, she began work as a counselor, where she now serves patients across the lifespan.

Cheryl’s diverse experience enables her to offer compassion and insight into both physical and emotional suffering. Chronic illness, somatic-related ailments, attachment issues, learning challenges, sensory processing disorder, and parenting struggles are all areas of special interest for her. She firmly believes that everyone can benefit from therapy and makes it her goal to meet the client where they are and accompany them throughout the journey to meet their goals. Her approach is person-centered and trauma-focused, and she truly wants to see life improve for each of her clients.

Cheryl is kind, committed, and easy to connect with. She knows firsthand the importance of seeking out mental health care and having a support network, in her own words:

“As an adoptive parent, I understand the complexities of parenting through adoption and trauma. I also sought counseling for my children throughout their lives and know how important it is for both children and their parents to feel supported.  One of the most life-shaping experiences I have ever had was taking part in a 9-month  DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) family course with my spouse and teenager.  I learned so much and still use those skills in nearly every therapy session.”

Outside the office, Cheryl recharges by getting outdoors with her spouse - whether they’re hiking, cycling, or working on their pickleball game. She’s also currently learning to golf! She  loves to travel, but is just as happy at home with her golden retriever, Ruby.

One of her favorite quotes is attributed to Margaret Tyson, who said:

"People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care."
